D. Eitel was born at Esslingen in Wirtemberg. He has however married an English lady and his children have been born in this Colony. He succeeded Dr. Legge as Head of the London Mission; he was selected in 1875 by Governor Sir Arthur Kennedy for the post of Director of Chinese studies. Since then he was promoted by Sir Michael Hicks Beach to be Inspector of Schools; and, pending Your Lordship's approval of the new Interpretation Scheme (about which I hope to write by next mail), he has been appointed Acting Chinese Secretary.

As far as I can see there is no more trustworthy official and no better citizen in the Colony than Dr. Eitel.

3.

When this Ordinance was before the Legislative Council the Chief Justice remarked that he entirely endorsed the observations recently made in the House of Peers by Lord Stanley of Alderly to the effect that the Government was to be congratulated on possessing an officer like Dr. Eitel; that he was a man of enlarged mind, well acquainted with the Chinese Customs and desirous of acting in harmony with them and of improving them where possible.

4.

I believe those are the opinions of all who know Dr. Eitel and are interested in the prosperity of the Colony. I have therefore much pleasure in recommending him.
